"Off the books" employment is not only illegal, it's not very smart. Social Security can pay provide significant benefits upon your retirement, death, or disability. If you're not paid in you can't collect.
In the event of a government shutdown this month, the Social Security offices will remain open. Hearings will be held and benefits paid.
Residents of Guam, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands and American Samoa are not eligible for SSI. A set of twins, one of whom residies in Guam, have filed lawsuits challenging this. All Social Security offices, including hearing offices, will be closed on Weds., Dec. 5 to honor the memory of George H.W. Bush. I'm glad I don't have any clients scheduled for hearings that day.
